BIOGRAPHY
Since emerging at the turn of 2012, Evian Christ has been a unique force in the electronic music scene. With an uncanny ability to shift between the mainstream and the ultra-underground, the artist born Joshua Leary has worked across an eclectic and idiosyncratic range of projects; including major label production work, strobe-loaded festival shows, esoteric art installations, EP’s, mixtapes and his cult club night Trance Party.
From the very beginning, Leary’s career has been imbued with intrigue and unorthodoxy. It all began when he uploaded a handful of bedroom demos to YouTube, with little plan beyond showing them to some friends. Within days, the tracks were discovered by journalists and bloggers on both sides of the Atlantic, and a feverish investigation into the identity of their creator was launched.
Many believed the tracks were the work of an already-established artist, and names ranging from the absurd to the borderline offensive were bandied around. However, it soon transpired that Evian Christ wasn’t some super-producer side project, but the moniker of a trainee schoolteacher from Ellesmere Port. Leary was more surprised by the reaction than anyone. After signing to the feted Tri Angle Records, he quickly found himself working at the vanguard of modern pop music, co-producing billboard-topping albums by the likes of Kanye West and Travis Scott.
